Book Excerpt

This book has been a dream of mine for many years now and I am so happy that it has finally come to fruition. From its inception and putting together all the different fertility resources, through to its completion, it has been a wonderful, humbling, learning and illuminating journey. While some things went very smoothly, other unexpected obstacles surfaced, very much akin to the roller coaster of emotions I felt during my fertility journey.

I have learned so much during this process, from what we can do with lifestyle interventions such as diet and exercise, to Eastern modalities like acupuncture and herbs, and mind-body practices like NLP and hypnosis. There are also the many facets of couples’ counseling, medical treatments, the use of donor sperm and donor eggs, and gestational carriers; and the intricacies of adoption. And for some, there is living without realizing their dream of having children.

I am grateful to all my co-authors and to the patients who have been brave and kind enough to share their stories in the hopes of helping others. I am honored to have Dr. Rankin and Dr. Northrup endorse this project and cannot thank them enough for taking the time to review the manuscript.

I hope that by reading this book, you have found what you needed. Trying to become a parent can be one of life’s hardest and most heartbreaking journeys. However, you are not alone. In sharing these resources with you, I hope you feel empowered to be, do, have and become whatever you need, so that you can endure your fertility journey with grace, as well as a deeper appreciation of how this particular challenge has helped you to grow and expand.

I often wonder why I fell in love with this field during my obstetrics and gynecology residency and why my application was accepted one day late. I’ve also wondered why I experienced the heartache of struggling to conceive. What brings me peace is knowing that there must have been a divine intervention that orchestrated my life in the most synchronistic way possible, so that I may share with others what I learned on my fertility journey. Life coach and best-selling author Martha Beck, says that many of us find and fulfill our callings by going “to hell and back.” She says that once we’ve been to hell and made it back safely, we often feel called to serve those who are still in hell. That’s how I feel. Because I’ve experienced it myself, I know that infertility can be its own kind of hell, and I hope this book has helped to not only educate you, but offer you comfort. I don’t know how I would feel, had I not conceived, however, I know that my spirit would have guided me to exactly where I had to be for the greatest divine good to come of such an experience.

The more I do what I do, the more I love it, and the more awe I feel. And the more we know about fertility, the more I realize, with profound humility, that there is much we don’t know. A willingness to be humbled by the mystery of bringing life into the world seems part and parcel of my work as a fertility specialist.

In my desire to bring peace and acceptance to fertility patients everywhere, I am sharing the wisdom in this book as a resource and a stepping stone for your unique and personal journey.

I look forward to hearing your feedback, continuing to offer you new resources, and perhaps, one day, meeting you.

Sincerely, Timea Belej-Rak, M.D.
